Department of Energy and Environment
Complete depletion of all natural resources such as fossil fuels is coming since the use of energy has been getting greater for our own conveniences due to industrialization, developing urban areas and many other reasons. Also, the reckless consumption of natural resources makes the future of mankind unclear and the negative effects of it can be easily found in worldwide environmental issues such as global warming, ozone depletion, desertification, heat island effect and so on. The energy and environmental issues cannot be separated, and to work out solutions for various environmental problems as well as for raising questions about limited resources, the whole system requiring energy has to be environmentally thought-through and fundamentally changed in an environment-friendly way. In the Department of Environmental Energy Engineering, the objective is to educate and train professionals and specialists who are qualified with the environmental background knowledge and scientific critical-creative thinking which is required for leaders of the energy industry by close examination on how development in energy influences environment, investigating the ways to minimize those influences, recycling and circulation of energy sources, and exploitation of various alternative energy sources.
Education and Research
To investigate the influences of energy sources in the environment, ground-level studies such as industry process types, environmental impact assessment techniques introducing the LCA concept, statistical process methods and more are carried out. In addition, to acquire skills and knowledge dealing with pollutants in the environment, investigation into studies about water, air and waste industries is also performed. With a basis in such ground-level studies, industry-level practices such as cleaner techniques for saving energy including process management and improvement; alternative energy technologies like wind, solar, tidal, geothermal and hydro-power; generation of methane and hydrogen gas from all sorts of organic resources; waste heat, thermal decomposition oil, recollection of thermal decomposition gas from combustible wastes; energy-efficient fuel cell technology and cogeneration steam supply and power generation are all researched and investigated in our labs.
Application & Related Industries
Applications of research and studies in this Department of Environmental Energy Engineering are field-specific and related industry-based for prospective specialists and professionals in these industries. The following industries are all related to our research: industries producing global warming pollutants and generating environmental pollutants from just using energy; producing new and renewable energy eliminating the uses of fossil fuels; using clean technology forming environment-friendly industries by saving energy; generating energy from organic or combustible unused resources and wastes; manufacturing green conservation products that can save energy. Also, preventing the generation of environmental pollutants from using energy, efficient ways to process and manage emission of pollutants, finding sources of energy, environmental pollution in utilization and supply processes, and any energy-related problems are all considered to be the objectives of our research projects.
Characteristics of the Department and Development Prospect
Faculty members are specialists in clean technology, new and renewable energy and environmental pollution prevention and control. Full-time and part-time student enrollment is fifty percent each so that research-based information and field-based experiences can be developed in cooperation. Furthermore, workforce agencies of energy in Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy are providing various support and aid. The prospect and the potential are considerably high due to Kyoto Protocol from United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Demand for research professionals and specialists practicing technologies related with both environmental and energy problems seem to be on the rise since awareness has been raised about the problems in the environment and energy that are inevitably connected.
